Apple and worm counting

Apple and Worm Counting {and Blog Hop!}

Johnny Appleseed’s birthday is coming up soon, the 26th of September to be exact. He would be 238 today! In honor of his birthday I have a cute apple counting activity for you!

We just recently did a bunch of apple activities and I had an idea of doing something like this then, but it never materialized. It could have been that I was swamped with planning Riley’s 1st birthday party on top of the bazillion other things on my to do list!

However, things have started to calm down a little recently and I had some time to put what was in my brain into action.

Apple and worm counting

You can’t get enough counting, number recognition and one-to-one correspondence practice at an early age. I can’t tell you how many children I’ve had come into Kindergarten that really had no concept of counting objects. We do our best to get them caught up, but the development of a child’s one-to-one correspondence not only has an impact on their math skills but reading as well.

Apple and Worm Counting

Apple Printable
12 Green Craft Sticks (or plain ones painted green)

Print out the apples on heavy paper and cut them out. With a exacto knife, cut a slit about twice the width of the craft stick to the right of the number.

Draw little faces on the green craft sticks to make them your “worms”. Add dots on each “worm” so that you have a stack of worms with 1 – 12 dots to match the apple number cards.

Lay out the apple cards and “worms”. Have your child count the dots on the worm, match to that number, then have them “eat” the apple. Continue until all worms are gone! Just a note, if you think you’ll have some energetic worms, you might want to reinforce the slits with some tape before you cut them. Landon got a little too carried away on a few and they are starting to rip (after being used for several days). Happy Counting!

  1. Just pinned this. Adorable! I linked up a very similar activity we did, but with alphabet letters and word families. Apple crafts are so cute! I will need to try this idea with my 4 yr old. He would love it.

    1. Hi! Thanks! He loved it, I had to reinforce the slits after a few days because we had some very energetic worm feasts going on! Thanks for linking up!

    I think it might work well to make the apples with felt. I’m going to try it today. They have stiffer prices of felt that be perfect at joannas.

    1. That is an awesome idea! They have been getting a lot of love and the cardstock is starting to show it!

  4. That is the cutest counting game I have ever seen! Pinned!

    The Dollar Tree has bulletin board decorations in the shapes of apples, you would have to color them red because they are white with a red outline. I love this idea! Thanks, now I know what to do with those apples.
