Volcano

How to make a volcano!

Part of talking about dinosaurs is where they lived and what their environment was like. A bit ago we had some fun playing with baking soda and vinegar, I thought making a simple volcano and making it erupt would be great fun. It was!

Volcano

Empty water bottle
Playdough or salt dough
Red food coloring
Baking soda
Vinegar
Dish soap

Place the empty water bottle in a water prof tub. Cover the outside of the water bottle with play dough or salt dough and let it dry for a day or two. It really doesn’t have to be anything fancy. See:

Homemade Volcano

Place a few drops of red food coloring in the bottom of the water bottle and add a small amount of warm water (like 1/4 cup). Add a few tablespoons of baking soda and a generous squirt of dish soap and gently swirl the tub to mix it all together. The soap really helps to make the bubbles last longer but it’s not necessary. Pour the vinegar in and watch it pour out!

A note of what NOT to do… don’t cover the top of the “volcano” with your hand while it’s erupting then lift it up shortly to see what will happen. If you do, make sure you’re not wearing good clothes and the camera and anything else you don’t want to be stained with red food coloring is far away. Trust me.
